3 coin pouches with some lip balm and coins

August 23, 2025

We've been making these little textured coin pouches lately.  They're perfect for slipping in a pocket with a few essentials in, or for popping around your neck to keep the contents handy and safe.

You can make most of them with just a 20g ball of Happy Cotton, but really, you can use anything you have to hand, just use appropriate needles for your yarn.  You can make them bigger or longer, but then, of course, you'll need extra yarn.

Here's how to make them:

Style 1 - Buttoned up

Green coin pouch

You will need:
20g of cotton yarn
4mm knitting needles
2 buttons
tapestry needle for sewing up

Method

Cast on 23 stitches
Knit 3 rows

Start textured pattern:

Rows 1 & 3: knit all stitches
Row 2: purl all stitches
Row 4:  k1, * p1, k1; repeat from * to end of row

Repeat these 4 rows until your work measures approx 9 inches, or 3 times your desired height

Make buttonholes:
Next row: K5, cast off 2 stitches, K12, cast off 2 stitches, k to end
Next row: K4, cast on 2 sts (over buttonhole gap), k12, cast on 2 sts, k to end

Knit 3 rows. Cast off.

Make Up:
Fold into thirds, stitch the 2 lower thirds together. Sew on buttons and enjoy your new pouch.

Style 2 - with a cord

Next row: k1, slip next 2 stitches from left needle to right as if you were about to k2tog, k1, pass the slipped stitches back over the stitch just worked, k1
Next row: k

You should have 3 stitches left.

Work 6 inches of icord (method below).
K3 tog and fasten off

For second part of fastener:
Cast on 3 stitches, work 6 inches of icord, k3 together and fasten off.

For strap:
Cast on 3 stitches, work 38 inches of icord, k3 together and fasten off.

To make up:
Fold pouch into 3 with flap overlapping.  Stitch 2 lower edges together.  Sew icord strap and fastener into place.  Tie the fasteners together in a bow to close your pouch.

Icord method
Cast on 3 stitches
Knit all 3 stitches
* Slip all stitches purlwise back to your first needle.  Do NOT turn your work.
Now knit all 3 stitches again.. pull the first stitch a little tight.  You will be carrying the yarn along the back of your work from the last stitch on the needle to the first.
Work from * until your cord is the length you want.
Knit all 3 stitches together and fasten off.

Cut yarn, leaving a tail of approximately 10 inches, thread through the remaining 6 stitches, pull tight.  Then use the tail to sew up the side seam.

Make cord

Cut 3 lengths of yarn slightly longer than you'd like your fastening cord to be. Tie them together at one end.  Work a simple plait, knot the end, trim and thread through your eyelet row.
